NEWSTALK 830 WCCO
Three words.
Suspiciously fun.
“Deep State Fair.” Those three words were the starting point. Skip developed the idea into a fully produced radio promo, handling the writing, voice performance, sound design, and production.
The finished spot earned a 2026 Radio Mercury Award.
The creative side of WCCO.
WCCO is a Minneapolis News/Talk radio station with more than a century of history in Minnesota. Skip helps shape how the station sounds, writing and producing promos that give listeners a feel for ‘CCO’s people, its coverage, and its personality.
“Deep State Fair” gave Skip the opportunity to take an unusual premise and see how far he could go with it. He developed the script, performed the voiceover, and built the finished promo through music, sound design, and character-driven acting. The result earned a 2026 Radio Mercury Award.
That same creative approach runs through all his work for WCCO. Each promo calls for something different: a character, an unexpected conversation, a ridiculous situation played completely straight. The writing and production develop together, with the sound helping tell the story and the performance giving it personality.
Deep State Fair leads the selections here, followed by more examples of what happens between the shows at WCCO.
